Conserving energy in the home can save €500 per year

power of one campaignThe power of one became the power of many when Carlow/Kilkenny Greens hit the streets of Carlow in January this year. Working door to door in three housing estates they told residents that just by exercising care with the use of energy they could save about €500/year.
Many households took up the challenge and now residents in Tommy Murphy Lower Estate, Rathnapish, Browneshill and Highfield are trying out the scheme for themselves.

Based on a trial carried out by Power-of-One, householdersare shown how to reduce energy consumption without causing discomfort. Suggestions include switching off lights when leaving the room, turning the heating thermostat down to 20oC and walking or cycling short distances around town.
It’s all very simple but is surprising how much money and energy it can save. In a trial by Power-of-one, eight families averaged a saving of 20% of their personal energy usage.
If this could be repeated in homes around Carlow it would provide the saving required by the Government and by the EU before 2020. Energy saved is as useful as energy purchased and with promotion costs running at only 0.2 cent per kilowatt-hour saving energy costs a lot less than purchasing gas or electricity.
