WHITE URGES RAINWATER HARVESTING FOR PRIMARY SCHOOLS TO CUT WATER USAGE
Green Party T.D. Mary White has urged schools to research the possibility of using rainwater harvesting to cut water usage in schools.
Deputy White said: “With the recent concerns on high water charges for schools the option for rainwater harvesting is an attractive possibility. This method of capturing water from clean surfaces, roofs etc., can cut water consumption to a significant level which would greatly benefit schools. Schools could get an individual assessment with regard to roof scale and roof area to pupil ratio. This is a basic method of water capture from clean surfaces, which is then stored and used for later use.”
Deputy White added: “I believe rainwater harvesting is the way forward for schools. I am aware of a pilot study in Carlow and I have written to the Minster for Education, Mary Hanafin, and to my colleague, Paul Gogarty T.D., Chair of the Education Committee, to investigate this method of water collection for schools. I will seek a possible grant support mechanism to get the scheme up and running.”
