WHITE CALLS ON COUNCIL TO INITIATE RIVER WATCH TO PROTECT OUR RIVERS

Green Party Deputy leader Cllr. Mary White has called on Carlow Local Authorities to initiate a River Watch system to protect our rivers.

Cllr. White said,” I was contacted by concerned local people in Carlow Town about a pollution incident on the River Burrin. Despite the Local Authorities being notified over ten days ago, very little action was taken until recently. As can be seen from photographic evidence this was a serious pollution incident on the River Burrin. At this time of year salmon are going upstream to spawn and from inspection, it would appear that this was a sewerage related incident which would be harmful to fish life on the Burrin.

Cllr. White added,

I am calling on the Council to set up Carlow River Watch to protect our rivers, from, the smallest to the biggest. Each river has it’s own unique eco system and biodiversity and we cannot afford to be lax or complacent where water quality is concerned. This is particularly relevant where large scale development is taking place in our small towns and villages and in particular where infrastructure in terms of sewerage may not be adequate to cope with the increase in housing densities in Carlow Town and County. Water has no boundaries, water is everybody’s issue, water is a fragile resource. Let us guard our water carefully.”
