WHITE CALLS ON CARLOW CO. COUNCIL TO PURCHASE LAND FOR ALLOTMENT USE
Green Party Deputy leader Cllr. Mary White has called on Carlow Co. Council to purchase land under the Acquisition of Land ( Allotments) Act 1926 to provide land for people in Carlow who would like to garden and reap the rewards of local food production.
Cllr. White said,
” In this era of high density housing and concomitant , low garden space, times that we live in more and more people are clamouring to get back to producing their own food - albeit on a small scale. The allotment would allow people to do just this. I believe a resurgence in community well- being would spring from this initiative, apart from the joys of harvesting ones own produce. Anyone who has visited England , Scotland or the continent will see the tremendous interest in allotments in those countries. Cllr. White added,
” I would encourage Carlow Co. Council and Town Council to acquire land in order that this wish to produce food locally, can be rewarded. The sense of well-being, community spirit and physical benefits from looking after an allotment are immeasurable and I also believe it would lead to great community spirit among the allotment holders. With the enormous price tags now attached to development land, a dedicated allotment area in Carlow would spark an entrepreneurial spirit in our county which would lead to a sense of satisfaction in growing local food for those people with limited garden space or who live in the ever increasing number of apartments in Carlow Town and County
