DEPUTY LEADER OF GREEN PARTY CALLS ON GOVERNMENT TO PROTECT THE ENVIRONMENT AND NOT FAVOUR COMPANIES WHCH POLLUTE

Once more Ireland will overshoot it’s Kyoto Targets to curb greenhouse gas emissions by a long shot and if we are to judge by the recent allocation of Carbon credits, this Government continues to favour industries such as the cement industry while ignoring greener cleaner industries. ” So said Cllr.

Mary White Deputy Leader of the Green Party Cllr. White added,
“It is a damning indictment of the Government’s handling of the second National Allocation Plan that it has failed to be visionary and to adopt less carbon intensive activities and to promote renewable energy production particularly in the area of biofuels.”

Cllr. White added
” With the recent closure of the Carlow Sugar Factory there is an unique opportunity to produce clean fuel with emission levels reduced by 55% . It is incumbent on the Government to remove excise duty from biofuels to promote the fledgling renewable energy sector and to keep within our Kyoto target levels.”

Cllr. White concluded,
” With our emission levels up, by a whopping 23%, over 1999 levels there is now a need for a revised Climate Change strategy.

“What we need today is a clear change of policy that would favour clean industries that enter the market-place. We also need further incentives for companies to further reduce their emissions. If that doesn’t happen consumers will have to pick up the bill for emissions caused by big business.

“I believe that incentives are needed to promote energy conservation measures such as insulation and to ensure that renewable energy such as wind, bio-mass and biofuels are given greater support. Climate change is a reality and it is time that the Irish Government took the issue seriously,”
concluded Deputy Leader White”
