IRELAND’S SHOCKING CAR DEPENDENCY HITS NEW HIGH

Soaring Greenhouse Gas Emission 130% over permitted levels

Cllr. Mary White Deputy leader of the Green Party today lashed the Government’s appalling car dependent record as being the worst in the world per capita and more than six times the European average for car use.

Cllr. White said, “Our car dependent culture is forcing more and more people to use their car for work because of a lack of public transport and rising house prices pushing people to live further away from their work and necessitating the use of their cars. ”

Cllr. White said, ” The Government has failed miserably to develop the biofuel sector despite a €205 million excise relief programmed. This is being stifled by a poor supply network ( only eight targeted plot projects), few grants for engine conversions and poor supports for farmers to grow energy crops.”

Cllr. White concluded ,” I understand that the South East Regional Authority is currently looking for funding from Sustainable Energy Ireland to develop a Bioenergy Strategy for the South East. This would encompass biofuels, wind etc.,. Kilkenny with it’s strong tillage base and already home to one of the Pilot projects (Kilkenny Cereals) is an ideal base for becoming a giant of the renewable energy sector. What is needed is Government commitment to spend money in Kilkenny rather than in Brussels on fines for non compliance of the Kyoto Directive.”
